Task 2A: Key Artwork, Task 2B: Collateral

LECTURES

Lectures are done in Task 1

INSTRUCTIONS (MIB)

Task 2A: Key Artwork

Instruction:
- create a key artwork that represents personal identity, using initials, first name or nickname
- explore and compose some artwork ideas with a few letters in your name (min 3 letters)
- use elements that can represent you the most (personalities, interests, visions, etc.), and choose the best one for your personal branding
- the artwork will be subsequently used in task 2B: collateral
- artwork size: 1024 x 1024

Ideas:
I plan to use my initials "JM" or my first name "Jia" as my key artwork. As the key artwork is to represent my personal identity, I decided to put my personality into the artwork. I sometimes doubt my self-aware of my own personality, so I also asked my friends for their impressions of my personality to have a more accurate result before narrowing it down.
- My personality: easygoing, harmony seeker, intuitive, empathetic, reserved, observant

Key artwork idea concept:
In Chinese word, there's a perfect phrase to describe my personality "easygoing", "harmony seeker" & "empathetic", it's called "ε€„δΊ‹εœ†θž", which means a person who is easy to approach because of their harmonious and thoughtful behaviour, who always not only consider themselves but also consider the situation of others. The Chinese word "εœ†" in the phrase itself can also mean circle or curvy, which is why I decided to put curvy & circular strokes in my key artwork as the main element, it represents my personality perfectly.
Figure 1.1: Visual references
I scroll through Pinterest to look for some references.

Figure 1.2: Idea sketches for my key artwork based on my initials "JM" and first name "Jia" (Week 5, 5/5/23)
Based on my idea concept, I developed these sketches, the key element is curvy strokes.

Digitalisation:
Figure 1.3: Refinement process of chosen "jia" key artwork sketch (Week 6, 11/5/23)
After getting feedback in class, I chose this key artwork sketch(leftmost) to proceed to the refinement stage, the rightmost is the final refinement. I use circle and oval shapes to build a more balanced structure.

Why is the dot in the "a"?:
The dot in the "a" is to make the key artwork looks like an eye, which represents my observant personality. Additionally, it also fits my concept of using circular elements in the key artwork, so why not :D

Figure 1.4: Key artwork structure (Week 6, 11/5/23)
My friend suggested that the three dots on each letter will look better if they are all aligned diagonally, so I added a diagonal line to make them all aligned, and it does look a lot better compared with before aligning, thanks to her golden suggestion.

Applying colours:

Figure 1.6: Chosen colours (Week 7, 17/5/23)
I think the red and beige colours work best together because of the strong contrast, the dark blue colour can be used for applying the shadow of letters on some collateral for Task 2B.

Final Submission:

Task 2B: Collateral

Instruction:
- Apply the key artwork on collateral (T-shirt, pins, stickers, etc.)
- Expand the key artwork with relevant designs
- Size: 1024 x 1024
- Create an Instagram account and post the key artwork & collateral, plan the layout

Figure 2.2: Failed attempts of collateral (Week 8, 24/5/23)
These are some failed attempts of collateral as there is only the key artwork repeatedly without any expansion, which look boring and bland.

Figure 2.3: Key artwork expansion (Week 8, 25/5/23)
I attempt to expand the curvy and circular element of my key artwork "jia", and use this certain element to develop the variant of circle shapes combination, with the contrast of beige and red colours.

Figure 2.4: Refined collateral (Week 9, 1/6/23)
I apply the key artwork expansion on the collateral, and they look less bland as the designs are more variant than before.

Animation:
Figure 2.5: Animation process in after effect (Week 9, 2/6/23)

Figure 2.6: Failed attempt (Week 8, 26/5/23)
After finishing this animation I only realise that it doesn't make sense at all, the zoom-in should be zoomed to the middle to make the visual more balanced, so I decided to remake another one.

Figure 2.7: Final animation (Week 9, 2/6/23)
For this refinement, I applied the circles in the middle to make a zoom-in of it, and zoom out from the dot in the "a".

A combination of what I have worked on, failed attempts + refinement.

Instagram:
Figure 2.9: Instagram - Failed attempt (Week 8, 26/5/23)
As the T-shirt, self-portrait & tote bag look bland with purely the key artwork without any design expansion, I considered this as a failed attempt.

Figure 3.1: Instagram - Final layout (Week 9, 2/6/23)
After I did the refinement for my collateral and animation, I reupload everything with the same layout as before.

FEEDBACK

Week 5
Feedback from peers:
- Alphabet is readable, but have to be careful with the "j" because it almost looks like a "s" at the first glance
- The first one does look like logo
- The first "j" should have the similar weight like the "m", having contrast thin and thick stroke at the same time
- The fourth one "a" ending stroke can be shorter
- The wavy "J" is interesting but should add more alphabet along with it
General feedback:
- some fonts created don't really have a direction
- Have a mind map to list out anything about yourself, and figure out what speaks about yourself the most, develop it on the types

Week 6
Specific feedback:
- Stop cooking with negativity
- The "jia" is an interesting form, can go in this direction, need more proper crafting
- use circles to construct
- "a" & "i" can form a circular shape
- "j" could be a nose
- be careful with the length of "j", make sure the letterforms have balance
General feedback:
- be specific with the characteristic of yourself that you want to present on the key artwork

Week 7
General feedback:
- consistency in the key artwork photo (same mood)
- colour palette: complementary, contrast
- choose a primary colour for the key artwork
- key artwork animation: simple and don't overdo it (with primary colour)
- identify the visual possibilities for the key artworks to create assets for Instagram
- all work must be in 1024 x 1024

Week 9
Specific feedback:
- should put more thoughts on the t-shirt
- more expansion on key artworks
General feedback:
- avoid too much repetition of the key artwork, do more expansion
- next week need to upload the digitalisation progress of final task

REFLECTION

Experience: Doing this task was an exciting experience that allowed me to delve into the fascinating world of visual communication and my own artistic expression. By narrowing down my personality, I had the opportunity to create artwork that really represents me, and even making collateral, it is like making merch about myself, which is quite hilarious and fun. I did find some difficulty at first when creating the key artwork sketches as I didn't know how to express my personality in the design that can represent myself. But after getting feedback from my peers, their suggestions and encouragements make me have a certain direction.

Observation: While making the collateral, I noticed how important design expansion is for the key artwork. As I need to do research and exploration before making the collateral, I scroll through some designer websites, and their works inspired me a lot. The playfulness and balance between the typeface and illustration are fascinating, also the variant of the collateral from these websites make me learn many things from them. Here is my personal favourite out of every work I have seen.

Findings: This task has made me learn that finding purpose for design is crucial, there must always be some meaning and rationale behind the work so that the direction for designing can be clear. If there are no such things, doing further expansion for the design can be quite difficult, as there is no context behind the design, and one wouldn't know if there's any room to expand the design, or totally out of ideas.

Typographic syntax
- Syntax is the connecting of typographic signs to form words and sentences on the page
- Element of design: Letter, word, line, column, margin

Letter:
- Typographic syntax: the study of individual letters in typefaces and their various characteristics.
- Letters: Can differentiate one typeface from another and exist in different weights, sizes, and shapes
- Individual letters: Can combine in new configurations to create cohesive visual units
- The combination of letters acts as signs within a larger system of signs
- The interaction between the typographic sign and the surrounding white space on the paper is visually dynamic
- The relationship between form and void is an inherent part of typographic expression
- The use of white space and letter repetition creates balance and animation on the page
