PROJECT 2: DIGITAL TRIPTYCH
Digital triptych assignment brief:
I chose cultural celebration as my theme for this project. Since my ethnicity is Chinese, so I chose a cultural celebration from my own culture, which is Hungry Ghost Festival.
Research:
Hungry Ghost Festival is much rooted in Buddhist culture, it is the seventh month of the lunar calendar, which is also called the "ghost month". According to Chinese folklore, it is believed that ghost month is a time when the gates of the afterlife open and allow spirits to come out from the lower realm to the world of the living. Therefore, people will refrain from going out too much during the ghost month,, especially at night, because this may upset the spirits. It is also a celebration to honour the ancestors and display offerings for passing spirits. You can offer food like rice, noodles, and fruit to the passing spirits.

1. Chinese joss paper: known as ghost or spirit money, is sheets of paper that are burned in traditional Chinese deity or ancestor worship ceremonies during hungry ghost festivals.
2. Food: rice, noodles, fruits & Chinese tea are what people normally offered to the passing spirits.
3. Incense: Same as joss paper, incense is also burned as offerings.
The Chinese word in the middle “鬼节” mean Hungry Ghost festival, and the illustrated offerings will be placed surrounding the word. The small square with the Chinese word "七月十四” (means July 14 in lunar calendar, it is the day of celebrating Hungry Ghost Festival) at the bottom left corner, I plan to make it into something like a chinese seal.

REFLECTION
Doing this project has made me become more familiar with using pen tool, because the illustrated offerings need quite some time to draw with pen tool, but I can feel that my speed of using pen tool is getting faster, so it is a good practice for me, as pen tool is one of the most used tool on illustrator. I faced some difficulties to adjust the colour palette of the design, since there are lots of elements in the design, so it is significant to be careful with the colour decision, I tried my best to not have too much of different colours, or else the design will become messy.
