Week 10: Intro to After Effects

Following the lecturer's demo tutorial in class, we did an After Effects exercise as a practice for the final project. This is the first time I use After Effects, I found the interface a little bit complicated at first, but after doing the exercise I have learned the basics of it.

Since the project theme is "self-titled", it is an exploration project for students to express their own individuality and personality into digital art self-expression, so the first thing is writing a biography about myself to have a certain direction.

I already have an idea in my mind, which is to do something like a windows pop-ups photos collection, inspired by the Windows XP-inspired designs I have seen before.

Figure 1.6 - 1.7: Based on my sketches, I arrange my self-taken photos into the design, and apply them one by one to the windows pop-ups.

I also added some adjustment layers on the photos to adjust the brightness, contrast & colour balance.

After making the poster, I import the file on After Effects to make some animation, I added key frames to adjust the position & opacity of the elements.

About the work-in-progress animation:

- Need to add more editing in the photos, can add filters & apply double exposure on them, also add some adjustment layers

- The animation itself is fine

- Remember to add background music for the final animation, can be any sound effect or just pure music

REFLECTION

Since the theme is "self-titled", there are no certain limitations with it, it could be anything about ourselves based on our creativity, so I personally enjoy the creating process, especially using After Effects to make animation has made me become more familiar with its interface.  I have applied the Photoshop editing techniques I have learned throughout the semester on this project, it is glad to be able to perform the techniques on the final project. The only thing that is quite unfortunate is Monday's class has many public holidays throughout this semester, so there are a few classes that we are unable to experience physically.
