Project 2: MLE Project with SBS
After the first presentation by the SBS students, the overall information is that they are using banana blossom in their food products for sustainability purpose.
For my group, our collaboration project with SBS students is to make food packaging for spring roll wrapper. What makes this spring roll wrapper unique from other spring roll wrappers is that it is made with banana blossom flour, a new and innovative creation of wrappers. They also show the spring roll wrapper packaging from the competitors, the designs are all old-fashioned and conventional, but they do look like food packaging.
According to the SBS students, their spring roll wrapper also contained more minerals and vitamins compared with other spring roll wrapper in the market. But all the health information is not certified, it is still seen as a claim, so we can't use any health-related information as the USP on the packaging.

Figure 1.1: Our group's mood board |
The SBS students created the brand name for the spring roll wrapper, "Bloom'in Wrap".
My groupmates and I picked a typeface and colour palette, then tried them with the brand name.
 |
Figure 1.2: My first sketch |
I tried to do an initial sketch to record my idea for the packaging after looking for visual references.
 |
Figure 1.3: Initial typeface and colour |
Our original thought for this typeface is that it fits GenZ's taste (Btw GenZ is the target audience for this spring roll wrapper, according to the SBS students). We ended up not using the typeface because it doesn't look like a food packaging typeface.
We didn't use the colour palette as well, because Mr Shamsul said this kind of banana blossom colour palette is too widely used, we should explore other colours, and refer to some organic food packaging.
Also, we later changed the brand name from Bloom'in Wrap to Wrap N Roll, as the original brand name seems misleading (It is supposed to be wrapper not wrap). The idea behind Wrap N Roll refers to the actions of wrap and roll the wrappers.
Figure 1.4: Chosen colour palettes |
After getting the feedback, we looked for other colour palettes (figure 1.4), which is based on the colour we have seen on organic food packaging, green and dark brown.
 |
Figure 1.5: Typefaces |
These are the typefaces we decided to use on the packaging. 3 of us going to do our own design, we planned to use a minimum of 2 typefaces from these typefaces on our own packaging, depending on personal design choices.

Figure 1.6: Visual references |

We finalised the visual references and moved on to our sketching process.

Figure 1.9: Logo designs |
I designed these logos and brand marks, and show them to my groupmates and let them make their own decision to choose anyone to put on their packaging.
 |
Figure 2.1: Two options for front packaging |
Referring to my refined sketch, I proceeded to create the packaging design. I ended up proceeding with the right option as my groupmates suggested.
For the USP, as we can't make health claims on the packaging, I use "vegan and vegetarian-friendly" as the USP.
The halal logo and food safety logos all refer to the guidelines of Malaysian food packaging.
Mr Shamsul suggested changing the typeface for the "SPRING ROLL WRAPPERS" and "Vegan & Vegetarian-friendly", as it looks old-fashioned and does not cater for the taste of GenZ. He suggested a sans serif typeface like what I used on other texts.

Figure 2.2: Week 9 progress (design) |
|
We got the nutrition facts information from the SBS students, and Gina's group offered us the instructions and recipe for using the wrappers to make popiah.
Figure 2.3 & 2.4: Week 9 progress (mockup) |
As week 9 Friday is the presentation for our packaging designs, I made some necessary changes on the designs and put them on a mockup.
Mr Shamsul's feedback for our group presentation is that the nutrition label is incorrect, we need to apply border and lines around the label.
The SBS students also made a refined version of nutrition facts information, so we have to change the information on nutrition facts before passing the designs to them.
 |
Figure 2.5: Refined nutrition facts label |
I refined the nutrition facts label according to the guide by the SBS students, as there are some strict regulations when it comes to creating Malaysian food packaging nutrition facts, so we have to follow the guide accordingly. I sent the label to my groupmates to ensure we all have the same label.

FEEDBACK
- Colour palette should explore more instead of using banana blossom palette, it's too conventional
- Fonts can explore more, refer to organic food packaging design
- Can use the benefits of banana blossom as USP (need to ask SBS students first)
- Bloom'in Wrap sounds misleading, can consider changing the brand name
- Can explore more visual references
- The headline on the packaging looks conventional, change it to the sans serif font that im using for others
- The green border can remove, or arrange it balance
- Missing out the border and lines for nutrition facts label
The journey of doing this project was quite challenging due to the time rush, as everything needed to be done by week 10 to make it before the Innofest. But I am glad that the head people of this collaboration project with SBS students couldn't make it to the packaging presentation, which made the stress and anxiety less. To be honest I am not quite happy with the outcome that I did, as it doesn't look shelf-ready at all, and does not really look like food packaging. I think the reason is that I didn't use photo of spring roll wrap on the packaging, which makes the packaging less convincing. I also think that the way I applied the colours also affected the outcome look a bit off.
From this project, I have learned the basic rules of designing Malaysian food packaging, especially the nutrition facts label, it has certain rules that we need to strictly follow, such as using Malay language.
