Project 1: Designing Custom Boxes for Non-Boxed Items

INSTRUCTIONS (MIB)

Project 1:  Designing Custom Boxes for Non-Boxed Items

Chosen non-boxed items

Figure 1.1: Item 1 - Cleansing lotion (180mm x 55mm x 55mm)

Figure 1.2: Item 2 - Glasses case (160mm x 65mm x 40mm)

Box diecut template
After measuring the height, depth and width of the items, I key in the numbers (each number adds on around 5mm to 10mm) on the packaging diecut template website to generate the templates

Figure 1.3: Item 1 - reverse tuck end template
Height: 190mm
Depth: 60mm
Width:60mm

Figure 1.4: Item 2 - tuck top snap lock bottom template
Height: 3.5mm
Depth: 70mm
Width: 165mm

Laser-cutting
On week 13, I went to laser-cut studio to do the box laser-cutting, using matte art cards. I had several failed attempts, but I am overall satisfied with how the final cutting came out.

I then proceed with glueing the diecut to make them into actual boxes.

FEEDBACK

- The windows of the box can have curved corners
- Just need 1 window, no window also fine
- The window size of the item 1 box should be adjusted smaller, or else the bottom tuck flap or glue flap will be visible
- The glue flap is a bit thin, make it thicker

REFLECTION

For this box-cutting project, I learned a variety of diecut templates for packaging boxes, and using the templates makes the process easier by typing in the suitable dimensions for putting in the items. I also learned how to use the laser-cut machine on campus, as Mr Shamsul showed me the step-by-step process, and it is actually quite a simple process, not as complicated as I expected. I realised that different types of packaging materials can result in the folding line being different, some material can make a clean folding line easily, while some material is not as easy to make a clean folding line and need to be careful while folding them. Therefore, using a suitable box packaging material is crucial. The placement of window is quite a tricky part, need to be careful with the placement to avoid the visible flap.
