PROJECT 1: PROPOSAL
Week 1: Group discussion & brainstorming ideas
My group has the first meeting during Wednesday's tutorial class, since all of us are going to Tokyo, our visual culture research will be based on any cultures from Japan. Based on the discussion, we first list out few of our initial ideas and then choose 3 topics out of all of them by voting.![]() |
| Figure 1.1: Ideas listing and voting |
We started doing some background research based on the topics, we basically just collected some info and reference links during this session.

Our final decision for the 3 topics are Harajuku Fashion, Origami & Wagashi.
I was assigned to the task of doing the research for wagashi, together with my groupmate Janaan.
Wagashi research
We did the research by following the design system, from artifacts & products, norms & values to basic assumptions.

After finishing the research for the topics, we start discussing the sketches for final outcomes.
Our preliminary ideas:
Harajuku Fashion - Projection mapping/fashion mini game
Origami - Origami folding memory game
Wagashi - Wagashi mini game (like a wagashi making simulator)
Janaan & I are in charge of drawing the sketches of the wagashi mini game
Ideas & concept:
We started by discussing the basic structure and concept of the game on Miro board.
Basically, the gameplay is going to be inside a restaurant, the players need to accept wagashi orders from customers by making and serving the wagashi for them. Players can level up their wagashi menu, and also complete the quests to receive additional in-game incomes.

| Figure 1.7: Wagashi mini game - basic structure & concept |
The style of the restaurant's interior is going to be some traditional Japanese-style room, which is called "washitsu", because it fits the theme and idea of wagashi, a traditional & cultural Japanese confection.
For the in-game interface, we looked up some other restaurant mini games, their similarities are having all the cooking materials on the table of the main-gameplay screen, players can make the food while the customers waiting in front of them. The advantage of this interface is that it can conveniently cover all the elements on the same screen, which is why we decided to do something like this.

My task for sketches: Title screen, wagashi prep station (main-gameplay screen), menu screen
While Janaan is in charge of level-up screen, quest list & recipe collection.
The restaurant interior is referring the Washitsu, a traditional Japan-style room.
For the customer designs, Janaan & I decided to set the customer characters based on the animals from Japan, such as Shiba Inu, Kitsune (fox in Japanese folklore), Japanese Bobtail Cat (plus the characteristics of Maneki Neko). They all are wearing Japanese traditional clothing, yukata.

FEEDBACK
Week 2:
Miss Anis's approval of topics research. Wagashi's topic is interesting, suggest adding another observation - seasonal confectionary, and explore also the modern adaptation like chocolates i.e. Kit Kat for every season, occasion etc, for more room to explore.
Week 4:
Since our final carry-out project will be the wagashi mini game, Miss Anis & Mr Asrizal suggest us to think about another idea instead of making a game, because a game prototype will still be using a lot of time to be done, and the time for doing final project will only be around 2 to 3 weeks.
So we came out with another idea, which is making a wagashi travel scrapbook in Tokyo.

REFLECTION
Doing this project is definitely a pleasant experience, especially with the great cooperation & task distribution between my group. I acquired a lot of facts and knowledge about wagashi while doing the research, such as the types, the seasonal wagashi, how they change the looks of wagashi to adapt to modern society, etc. I never knew there will be so many things that can be learned from a tiny traditional confectionery like wagashi. Doing the wagashi research makes me more looking forward to the study trip to Japan, I am extremely curious about the tastes. Even though the wagashi mini game will not be the final project outcome as we planned, I am still glad for having the experience of making the game illustrations. There are many things that need to be considered when making a game, especially game structure planning, it is basically the core of a game, for making a game can be working in a logical & user-friendly way. Since too many things need to be considered, I am also glad that we decided to not pursue this mini game plan in a limited working time.
