PROJECT 2: DATA COLLECTION

Group 24's data collection method: Site visit & visual analysis

Figure 1.1: List of places we searched for visiting
We end up narrowing them down to the final 8 places that we visited. Our criteria: each store must have seasonal wagashi and they must be selling different types of wagashi.
Since the stores in Japan usually close at 6 or 7pm, so we planned our schedule to make sure we have enough time for every visit.

Figure 1.2: Photos for data collection
During the study trip in Japan, we went to the 8 stores that we planned to go to. We took photos of the elements that we need for our projects and asked the staff about the wagashi details with our limited Japanese speaking skills. We recorded the data that we need by taking notes, such as the price of the wagashi, the season of the wagashi represent, the meaning behind the wagashi, and our own personal reviews about the wagashi. From what we have observed, most of the wagashi filling is red bean paste, although they are all looking different from the outside. It is because red bean is one of the main usual ingredients for traditional wagashi.

After we back to Malaysia, we compiled all the photos in a google drive folder, arranging them by different areas & stores. We then throw the photos and the data that we have recorded into the slides. Since some popular wagashi stores that we went to have official website that included some very detailed introductions of their wagashi, we also include those secondary research info in the data collection.

FEEDBACK

Week 6:
- Miss Anis said the overall data collection is good to go
- Still need to think of a good title for the final scrapbook
- We are suggested to use the layouts from Canva as an inspo

REFLECTION

Collecting data by site visiting in Japan is a very unique experience for me, it is definitely way more interesting than doing research purely by using online data, because we are able to actually see, feel & touch the artifacts by our own, and ask the info from the professional staff from wagashi stores. We are also able to get some data that is unable to be searched online since it is an actual first-hand experience from ourselves. I would say this experience has definitely broadened my field of vision.
